Residencies are a big part of the research and development across an arts practice. They offer a period of time to test, experiment and try new ideas and processes. Kate Brown usually alternates her time as a practicing artist and work with periods of exhibitions/production and development/research.
Recently after long discussions and an invitation from Ting Shuo, Hear/Say a sound focused residency specifically supporting experimental music, sound art, workshops, performance with a studio and listening gallery, Kate travelled to Tainan, Taiwan for a 2 week research and development residency in the west central district of Tainan City. Here she used the roof top for one hour listening and painting meditations at sunrise and sunset, recorded vocal improvisations at The Spring- a converted underground car parked turn open air sci-fi stylised lagoon, ran a vocal workshop and performance exchange session at artist run space Absence Space, tested ‘sigh’ sound recordings using motion sensors in the streets and alleyways of Tainan city, had supported sound recording workshops in the studio at Ting Shuo. She also and spent some time meeting local artists such as butoh dancers, ceramicists and traditional folk storytellers. Kate will continue to develop aspects of her research from the residency throughout 2025.
